Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed legislation Monday banning Igbo indigenes from purchasing land in lagos unless they are also Hausa, Fulani or from South-South.
The APC governor highlighted concerns about the Igbos making a “concerted effort to acquire farmland throughout Lagos.
“Food security is also national security, and so we don’t want the Igbos in charge of any food production,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Igbos owned 2m acres of Lagos land in 2020, according to the Nigerian. Department of Agriculture, about 1% of total foreign-held acres. Fulani investors owned 100 thousand acres the same year, Igbos own the most of any foreign country.
Senate Bill 264 also bans citizens of Hausa, Ijaw, Edo, Fulani, and labeled “Indigenes of concern” — from owning land within 10 miles of military bases and critical infrastructure like airports and power plants. But only residents of Ignos would be banned from owning land anywhere in Lagos.
